While soloing may not be one of Verdine White's main things, he is BY FAR, THE GREATEST bass showman on Earth and has laid down more bass groove hits than any other bassist ever, with the exception of maybe James Jamerson. But there never has been, nor ever will be any bass player who can dance and drop the funk on the bass simultaneously. PERIOD.

Wow! A lot comments on here questioning Verdine's playing? If that wasn't him on the albums who was it then? Names & proof? Let's say for the sake of argument he didn't play on the albums. He had to EXECUTE the lines live didn't he? They weren't pre-recording shows in the 70s. He's a band guy. Always has been. So he's going to sound uncomfortable playing against a more well rounded person like Marcus. Just like it's solo cats that struggle playing in band settings. Or EWF tunes. Until valid concrete proof is provided that Verdine didn't play on those records or live....he has earned his accolades.

Louis Satterfield is the guy playing bass on all those songs! Over the years Verdine has gotten better but far from the groove player people believe. And if you notice he does very remedial licks. I’ve been playing for 40 years and I 100% am not good at soloing however I’ve been playing long enough that when put in the situation I have enough chops just from playing so long that I can bust out a couple scales in the key we’re in and throw in a couple triplets and get by. Now that goes for anyone that has been playing for years! And your right Verdine is not a soloist because he’s really not a bassist! Proof ok look up Louis Satterfield .

Very misleading title, because a bass solo battle against Marcus is like boxing a young Mile Tyson with you having one arm tied. Verdine is a master studio and live bassist. He holds the Grove and fills like no other, but respectfully, he can't solo his way out of paper bag. Nevertheless, he's hands-down one of the greatest bass players of all time. Much love and respect to both him and King Marcus.

Verdine is not a soloist, he just does the bass player job: to maintain the band with groove and great non-busy lines, why always bassplayers need all those slap/tapping acrobatics?? Marcus is a great bassist but they have different techniques because one is a band member and other is a soloist, so chill and enjoy music, is not a competition.

EWF have sold over 90 million units of music world wide and performed worldwide to sell out crowds. You don't do that with a fake bass player or fake musicians. No two Bass Players are just alike. They are like food. Do you prefer meat and potatoes, cake and ice cream, fish and slaw, doughnuts and milk, etc. Much respect to Verdine and EWF, When 2020 arrives, they will have blessed us with great music and live performances for 50 years. Amazing! Success and Jubilation to you...
